Sales in houseplants continued to rise for a second month in a row according to the Garden Centre Association’s Barometer of Trade report for November (2017).
Compared to the same month in (2016), houseplant sales were up 19.05% and outdoor plants followed close behind with sales up 16.74%.
Iain Wylie, GCA Chief Executive, said: “It is not surprising to see houseplants becoming extremely popular in the run-up to Christmas as people often like to bring lots of colour indoors. The rise in sales also coincides with the introduction of festive houseplants and gifts such as Poinsettias, Cyclamen and Hyacinths. It is good to see the increases seen throughout the year in this category continue into one of the more important periods for houseplant sales at this busy time.
“There’s also still lots of colour to be had outdoors at this time of year and the rise in sales show garden centre customers were certainly making the most of this. They also spent their money in clothing departments, as sales were up 15.78% and in furniture and barbecue departments as sales there were up 11.57%.”
Hard landscaping sales were up 11.68%, food hall and farm shop sales were up 9.52% and catering sales were up 8.69%.
Sales in seeds and bulbs were 0.61% up, garden sundries up 9.71%, pets and aquatics up 6.1% and gifts were down -1.21%.
Iain added: “Christmas sales during November were up 2.55%, but we would expect this to rise significantly in our report for December, if the snowfall earlier this month hasn’t dampened sales too much.”
Member garden centres showed an average Year to Date growth of 3.36%.
